Book Review by Shelly Higgs March 2025
I wish I had written this book. In fact I thought about it, just this past summer as I was trying to teach my daughter how to swim under waves and how to judge when they were too big to go over and better to dive under... too bad I was probably a few years behind Pip with the idea, not to mention not as skilled to pull it off. Oh well, we all need our idols.
Just listed as one of the Children's Book Notables, this is a beautiful, relatable story about swimming at the beach. The illustrations are gorgeous (like water colour memories from my childhood) and we journey with Maisie as she learns how to navigate the waves.
The beauty of this book is its emotional undercurrent - utilising language and subtle metaphors that help us experience the waves in the same way as Maisie.
This is a story about many things. Learning to get through when you're scared. A relationship with child and parent. Overcoming. All magically woven together in a story you can read over and over. Highly recommended.
